Is Turbo VPN Worth It?

Turbo VPN is a mobile virtual private network (VPN) that should help you browse the wave safely and privately.

There are multiple reasons to use a VPN. You might want to access a site that only allows internet visitors from a specific country or region. You might browse risky parts of the web that could prove annoying if you leave your internet details behind. You might need one of many security benefits that come from using a VPN.

Does Turbo VPN stand up to the test for any of those purposes. It excels in some areas, but could do better in a few critical points. Let's take a look.

Region Changing with VPNs

Changing IP address is a basic feature of VPNs. Your connection goes into the VPN company's private network, and they have access to many different network connections.

You can choose not just a different country, but sometimes different regions in other countries or your own. Turbo VPN has 2,100 servers in 40 countries, with a bit less on the free version.

Which countries, which servers, and how many smaller areas? That's subject to change on all VPNs. Some servers are shut down by aggressive governments, or partnerships end. VPN companies simply maintain agreements and keep a certain number of options in major countries.

Why Would You Use a Mobile VPN?

Let's say you want to watch Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, or some other streaming platform from another country.

The selection of shows in the United Kingdom (UK), France (FRN), Germany (GER) the United States of America (USA), Japan (JPN), Australia (AUS), or New Zealand (NZ) can be very different. Why such a specific list of countries? Because only certain countries warrant the region rules, although that list is always changing.

Why is there a different in the first place? Some countries have distribution agreements in place. Taking money from specific distribution companies that have the rights for a specific country can be a big legal issue.

In a much more rare, but more publicly known reason, morality laws or cultural norms can be an issue. Some shows have cultural taboos that are against a specific country's culture, or at least what the government allows.

It could be an actual cultural issue, or it could be an outdated law that not even the citizens know about, but it's still a law. If someone wants to enforce the law, region differences happen.

Instead of flagging specific shows as not available in some countries (that's been done before, and even though YouTube seems to accomplish it, it's a problem full of bugs), streaming platforms simply create a specific catalog for a country or region and only that region can access the content.

How can they tell what your area is? Your IP address includes your area. Even if it's not your exact home or street address, it at the very least has your country identified.

That's where the VPN comes in, by simply changing the address of your data to something that is allowed.

Security Benefits of VPNs

When you're using a mobile device, what networks are you connecting to? Do you desperately need any connection at all? Do you use any wi-fi network available.

Most people should be aware that wi-fi networks can be owned by anyone, and they could be tampered with even if they're legitimate.

Hackers or people running a dishonest wi-fi network could be scanning the network for private traffic, passwords, user patterns, or even infecting devices for a bigger attack that might not be targeting you, but could still affect you.

A VPN helps you by wrapping your connection in a shield to protect you from most basic network attacks.

Turbo VPN Pros:

  • Decent free options with a 30-day free trial premium service.
  • Multiple platform support. Use your account on mobile or desktop/laptop operating systems.
  • Fast and easy setup.

Turbo VPN Cons:

  • No kill switch. If the VPN fails, you can connect to a normal network and expose your private data without much warning.
  • No torrenting allowed. This is an anti-piracy VPN, so they don't allow heavy downloads using torrents.
  • Slow speeds on free version. Don't use this for gaming.
